Science behind Reiki

Now we all know that Reiki helps to open paths and balance the energy already in our bodies and environment (as described by the low of energy, which states that “Energy can neither be created, nor be destroyed, we can just transform it from one state to another”). Reiki practitioner just acts as a channel for the life force energy (LFE). Reiki healers receive more energy for their own healing while becoming connected to the source of all universal energy. I have been describing the relation of science behind Reiki since my first post,

The reason for giving emphasis of science for this blog is that, most of the Reiki practitioners are unable to explain the theory or genesis of energy behind Reiki enigma. They just reply you with the answer that, Reiki is the form of Holistic Art or they gives up trying to adequately describe it and ends up with 'you'll have to try it sometime to get a real feel for it'. Despite the difficulty explaining what it is exactly, some practitioners continue to flock to it. Reiki suits our right brain intuitive side but for most people is terribly challenging to understand through the left brain world of logic and reason.

Reiki is a tradition grounded in intuition. Students commonly feel called to Reiki. It whispers to our soul without using words, inviting us to surrender to it and feel the awakening power within its’ gentle teachings and secret symbols

So let’s start at the beginning.

The true nature of Reiki can be explained by understanding its’ origin. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, quested for most of his life to find a way to experience happiness and peace of mind. His quest eventually led him to take an extended solitary meditation retreat that resulted in him being enlightened to the power of the universe. Upon this enlightenment he developed this system of personal healing named Reiki. He began to teach his understanding immediately to others – attuning 2000 people to Reiki before his death 4 years later. Of these 2000 students only 16 received their Shinpi-den initiations (Master-teacher). Usui’s own example seems to indicate that he believed that Reiki belongs in the hands of the people. Clearly his actions show that everybody could be attuned for the self-healing part of the teachings (1st Degree). He developed meditations and hand positions for the average person to use simply and easily for their own benefit. By his own written hand Usui indicated that Reiki was intended “…to heal heart and soul first, and then body second”.



First of all, when we get attunement for the first time, we are told that we are connecting to the universal energy. In fact, we are just being reminded that we belong to one consciousness and one energy field though different in vibrations. The harmonious energy in Reiki is similar with Buddhism term of Upeka ( a state of balance mind and emotion), when we attuned with Reiki, we are not just attuned to Reiki energy, but also to a balance state of consciousness.

In balance, everything gets healed. Now we can understand the deeper level of its existence and need.

Sub-atomic physics claims that at that level we are primarily made up of vibrations of energy that have at best a tendency to exist, and the relative distance between sub-atomic particles is comparable to the distance between the earth and sun. If this is correct, then we are comprised of primarily empty space and vibrations of energy that give us the perception of a solid physical reality. This perception, accordingly, is then only an illusion.

Then if we get into quantum physics it would seem to imply that there is in actuality no separation between any one thing and any other thing at that level. Energy and matter are interchangeable, and in fact, sometimes sub-atomic particles appear and disappear in a vacuum. Deepak Chopra(an Indian American public speaker, and writer on Ayurveda, spirituality and mind-body medicine) in one of his books used this point to suggest that if someone has a bad spine or bad heart and every cell in the body is replaced periodically then, at some level, that person has recreated their bad spine or heart. If we could come into contact with that quantum level why could we not recreate a healthy spine or heart? I have had success helping people with minor aches and pains, though I haven't spent a great deal of time cultivating these practices.

Let’s try to explain this with the help of Einstein’s last theory.

Reiki actually works on multiple dimensions similar to that of the Superstrings. It makes healing happen by restructuring and organizing the inconsistencies in the pattern of the superstring that leads to various diseases. Thus, establishing health and harmony by working at the level of the Super Strings that exist at higher dimensions (ten dimensions - according to the Superstring Theory).

As we have seen that Reiki means Universal Life Force energy. In this section let us see what science has to say about Life Force Energy (LFE).

Life Force Energy is the ultimate building block of the universe. All matter in the universe is ultimately made up of atoms which in turn is made up of sub-atomic particles protons, neutrons and electrons. These are ultimately made up of Super- Strings.

According to Superstring Theory (“A Theory Of Everything”) - Each string is unimaginably small, about 10^20, or 100 billion billion times smaller than a proton, and can vibrate only in a space-time consisting of higher dimensions.



Because these tiny vibrating strings are responsible for the properties of all matter (including the body of living beings), the cosmos has been likened to a cosmic symphony of superstrings. While poetically appealing, the strength of string theory is that it accounts for all four known forces in one elegant theory. These fundamental forces are gravity; the strong and weak nuclear forces and electromagnetism.

All that vibrates in this Universe is LFE: heat, light, gravity, magnetism, vigor, power, vitality, electricity & life are all forms of LFE. It is the cosmic personality, potent in all beings and non-beings. It is the prime mover of all activity. It is the wealth of life. This self-energizing force is the principle of life and consciousness.


So, now I can say that Reiki is the science of balancing energy using the symbols(given by Usui system) to maintain equilibrium and harmony with the artistic and logical way.
